Quipbank has partnered with East African Breweries Limited (EABL) to provide agricultural machinery on a rental basis to sorghum farmers contracted by EABL.
The partnership will see farmers access farming equipment like tractors, planters, ploughs, air seeders, boom sprayers and harvesters. Equipping farmers in production of this crop reduces the production cost, time needed for production, and increases efficiency and quality of produce
“Improved sorghum production is key in economic growth through the utilization of rare resources in product manufacturing. The cereal is also a major food grain in Africa and has both food and animal feed benefits. Our mission as Quipbank is to mechanize agriculture by availing farming equipment to farmers to boost production and curb starvation”, said Mr. Mogire commercial manager at Quipbank.
EABL is working with over 12,000 sorghum farmers in the lake region and the number is expected to grow to over 15,000 farmers in the coming season to meet demand created by the new Kisumu Brewery that was commissioned by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta on July 2017. The brewery will depend on this partnership to increase sorghum production needed in making Senator Keg beer. The new brewery is expected to raise annual demand for sorghum in the country from 20,000 metric tons to 60,000 metric tons in next five years.
Overall, EABL sorghum project is expected to touch over 45,000 farmers in the coming two years in over 10 countries.
The Kenyan government is also keen on improving sorghum production to promote food security, in line with the big four development agenda.
